The first half of series seven is in the can and Matt Smith says he wouldn't miss next year's 50th anniversary celebrations for the world - but beyond that he's remained coy about how long he'll be piloting the Tardis. So could his admission in the new issue of Radio Times be the strogest hint yet that he'll be playing the Doctor until at least 2014?

"We want to make [the anniversary] as big and bold and as brilliant as we can because, we hope, it can be one of the monumental bits of TV history," Smith told us. "But I doubt there'll be a regeneration..."

Smith had previously scotched rumours that he'd signed up to play the Time Lord beyond his 50th year, telling press at the launch of series seven opener Asylum of the Daleks: "I don't know where this talk of the 2014 contract came from... I haven't signed anything new."

But if the Doctor doesn't regenerate during the anniversary year - 2013 - then it surely must follow that Smith will be in the role until at least 2014?

Of course, even he doesn't know for sure everything that showrunner Steven Moffat has planned. "Steven will tease you right to the end," Smith warns viewers - "because that's what he does to me."
