Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele is bidding to become the first man to win the Olympic 10,000m title three times. In Beijing, he completed the long-distance double with success in the 5,000m later in the Games.

Given the scant recovery time, only the greats can contemplate such feats. Mo Farah went so close at the world championships last year with gold and silver. This time, in front of a home crowd… ah, if only we could script it. Mike Costello
