Fans who enjoyed the first big-screen instalment of The Hunger Games trilogy will be pleased to hear the adaptation of the third and final book is to be split into two films, following the trend set by blockbusters Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Twilight: Breaking Dawn.
The franchise, based on Suzanne Collins’s bestselling sci-fi novels, is produced by film studio Lionsgate who announced today that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be released in November 2014, followed by Part 2 12 months later.
The first movie smashed box office records when it was released earlier this year, pulling in £436 million worldwide – the year’s second-highest grossing film in America, after it was surpassed by The Avengers in May.
Earlier this week, Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman was confirmed in the role of gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee in the second instalment of the franchise. Production is due to start this autumn before a November 2013 release date, with the film’s stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth all set to reprise their roles.
