Man of the moment Benedict Cumberbatch is to make a cameo appearance in an upcoming episode of The Simpsons.
The Sherlock star landed a role in the world’s longest-running animated sitcom following a chance meeting in LA.
He said: “’I was at a meeting in the same place The Simpsons is recorded and heard there was a part going in an episode.
“‘I said, ‘I hate to muscle in here guys but could I record it?’ Next thing, I’m standing in a room with all those famous voices; Bart, Marge, Homer, Lisa.”
Cumberbatch said he was particularly chuffed to land the Simpsons role as he likes to tackle as wide a range of parts as possible.
“I like treating every job as the first time,” he told InStyle magazine. “And to do that, I’ll vary the work, so I’ll be a knuckle head and run around with girls and guns, then I’ll slow it down and do something different like [BBC2 Edwardian drama] Parade’s End.”
The actor is also set to appear in a number of high-profile Hollywood films, having won parts in Star Trek 2, The Hobbit and Twelve Years a Slave.
There are no details yet as to when the Simpsons episode will air, or what Cumberbatch will be doing in it, but we’re hoping there’ll be some crime-solving involved…
