Psychadelic 60s sci-fi movie Barbarella is to be transformed into a TV series.

Based on Jean-Claude Forest’s eponymous French comic book character, Roger Vadim’s 1967 movie starred Jane Fonda as the 41st-century sex kitten who used love to fight inter-galactic evil.

There’s no news yet as to who might fill Fonda’s kinky space boots but Nicolas Winding Refn, who directed Ryan Gosling vehicle Drive, is set to take charge of the adaptation, a joint production between Gaumont International Television and Martha De Laurentiis.

Refn called Barbarella “one of the ultimate counter-cultural characters” and said “I look forward to bringing this unique character to life for a new generation of fans.”

De Laurentiis said the director had “the perfect vision to elevate such an iconic character like Barbarella and bring her to new audiences worldwide.”

Exactly what form a 21st century update might take remains to be seen but given that the 1967 movie begins with a zero-gravity striptease and features a blind, impotent angel and a character called Duran Duran, the mind boggles...
