If you’re going to the cinema in August you’d best leave your pacifist tendencies at the popcorn stand, as the watch-word for this summer’s big movies is action, action, action.
Yes, with The Bourne Legacy, Total Recall and Sly Stallone’s kill-‘em-all-and-let-God-sort-‘em-out adventure The Expendables 2 appearing within the same four week period, you can expect to witness no end of ker-pow, ker-splat Hollywood violence at your local multiplex in the very near future.
And as you can see from the newly released poster for the star-studded Expendables sequel, Amelie it ain’t.
But then again, the same could be said of the new Bourne movie or the Total Recall remake, though both of those films have chosen to promote their thrills with cerebral posters reminiscent of the one designed for Duncan Jones’s Source Code.
So, which do you think makes the most effective advert? Are you feeling fired up (if you’ll pardon the pun) for The Expendables after seeing its incendiary poster, or do you think the combination of mystery, intrigue and downright zeitgeisty-ness of its competitors promises a more intriguing viewing experience?
Check out the posters (or use these links to larger versions: Bourne Legacy, Expendables 2, Total Recall), and then vote for your favourite in the poll below below. Does old-school artwork still work well for action movies, or is it time for the genre’s rampant machismo to make way for a more subtle style?
