Great Expectations – 11:05am, More4

This black and white adaptation of the classic Dickens tale is a masterpiece, from Pip’s terrifying encounter with an escaped convict on the Kentish Moors to his love for Estella (played by Jean Simmons as a child and Valerie Hobson as an adult).


The Bridge on the River Kwai – 12:05pm, Channel 4

WWII militant commander Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) and his unit are prisoners of war building a bridge for the enemy to boost moral but the irony is extended when escapee Shears (William Holden) is sent back to blow up the bridge and sabotage Japanese war efforts.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – 12:50pm, Film4

James Mason stars in this Jules Verne fantasy saga about a Victorian scientist captured at sea by Captain Nemo whose futuristic submarine offers a series of adventures in this treat for grown-ups and children alike.


Hook – 2:20pm, Comedy Central

Picking up a few years after J.M. Barrie left off, Peter Pan is a grown-up ruthless businessman who is lured back to Neverland by his children’s kidnap; a ploy by Dustin Hoffman’s pantomimic Hook to ensnare his old adversary.

The Wizard of Oz – 3:00pm, TCM

This classic musical fantasy, featuring Judy Garland’s iconic performance as Dorothy Gale, is the ultimate family film, from its fairy-tale landscape and characters to its abundance of meaningful messages and celebrated musical score.

This is Spinal Tap – 11:05pm, ITV4

Filmed in mock-documentary style this superbly constructed satire of the rock ‘n’ roll’ industry follows British heavy metal band Spinal Tap as they release their new album 'Smell the Glove' and embark on a comeback tour, entertaining their dozens of fans.
