Musical comedian Tim Minchin has landed a role in the upcoming sixth series of black comedy drama Californication, which follows the exploits of David Duchovny's sex-addicted writer, Hank Moody.

Minchin will play eccentric rock star Atticus Fetch - "Bowie, Bono and Lennon all rolled into one", according to Deadline - who helps turn Hank's novel God Hates Us All into a Broadway musical called A Crazy Little Thing Called Love. 

In a case of life pre-emptively imitating art, Minchin's own adaptation, Matilda: The Musical, based on the children's story by Roald Dahl, recently won a record seven Olivier Awards.
