Greg Davies, who plays the imposing Mr Gilbert in The Inbetweeners, is set to appear in a new BBC3 sitcom.

Cuckoo will feature the stand-up comic as an overprotective father who is appalled when his daughter returns from a gap year as a newlywed, with her idle hippy husband in tow.

Californian actor Andy Samberg, who is best known for his membership of comedy group The Lonely Island and his work on Saturday Night Live, will play the young layabout whose tension with Davies will form the basis of the show’s comedy.

The commission was announced in an interview given by BBC3 controller Zai Bennett to The Independent, in which he described Cuckoo as a programme that epitomises "where I want BBC3 comedy to be".

Bennett also spoke about the new series from Jack Whitehall, Bad Education, in which the comedian will star as an immature teacher.
