Martin Bayfield, the former police officer who won 31 rugby caps for England and three for the British Lions, is to join the Crimewatch presenting team. He will first appear on Tuesday 20 March.
Bayfield spent ten years in the Metropolitan and Bedfordshire forces, but gave up his first career to become a professional rugby player. Often partnering future England coach Martin Johnson, Bayfield was part of the 1992 Five Nations Grand Slam-winning side, and went on the 1993 Lions tour to New Zealand and to the 1995 World Cup.
"I am absolutely delighted to be joining the team on Crimewatch," Bayfield said. "It is a great honour to be asked to join such an important programme and to lend my support to a police service I served so happily for ten years and who supported me so magnificently through my rugby career."
Bayfield has previously appeared on ITV's rugby coverage of the 2007 and 2011 World Cups. His imposing 6ft 10in physique also landed him the role of young Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and he was Robbie Coltrane's stunt double in all of the franchise's films.
