Suranne Jones is to play the lead in The Secret of Crickley Hall, a BBC1 dramatisation of James Herbert’s 2006 bestseller.
The haunted-house chiller, to be shown at Halloween, will also feature Tom Ellis (Miranda), Wallander stars David Warner and Sarah Smart, Douglas Henshall (Primeval) and Iain de Caestecker (The Fades).
Jones takes the role of Eve Caleigh, a woman who moves her family to Crickley Hall to try to get over the disappearance of their son, only to be plagued by supernatural occurrences. A dual timeline then develops, with the action moving between now and 1943.
“The Secret of Crickley Hall is a classic haunted house spine-chiller with an emotional family story at its heart,” Jones said.
Writer/director Joe Ahearne added: “Everyone loves a good ghost story and James Herbert is an iconic writer in the genre. He’s come up with a really thrilling and moving story that delights you while it’s terrifying you. It’s a testament to his craft that we’ve attracted such a great cast to play the characters he created.”
Filming starts this month in and around Manchester.
