Zooey Deschanel’s performance as the mild mannered (and rather strange) Jess Day in New Girl certainly did it for the kids last month as the US imported comedy stormed the 4oD charts with nearly three million views.
The show’s first series was more than a million views ahead of its nearest rival, Hollyoaks, in a month where more than 48 million views were made across the 4oD service – a 10 per cent increase on January last year.
Although three series of E4’s The Inbetweeners made it in to the top ten list with a combined viewership of more than 4 million, no individual series could challenge the might of New Girl.
Other well-viewed series on 4oD included One Born Every Minute, Shameless and Desperate Housewives.
The most popular genre on 40D in January was, as you might have already guessed, comedy, garnering more than 13 million views. In a close second, drama attracted 12.7 million plays, ahead of factual (8.7m views) and entertainment (7.9m views).
According to Channel 4 figures, 4oD received 4.7 million unique visits in January with each user on average spending 1.9 hours on the platform and 23.6 minutes per view.
4oD was launched in November 2006 and is available online and through a range of mobile devices, internet connected TV’s and games consoles.
