Sex and the City prequel finds its Carrie Bradshaw

AnnaSophia Robb to play a young version of role made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker

American actress AnnaSophia Robb has been cast as the young Carrie Bradshaw in The Carrie Diaries, a prequel to Sex and the City to be shown on teen-focused US network The CW.

Robb is best known for playing Violet Beauregarde in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and for roles in Bridge to Terabithia and Soul Surfer. She is also to star with Douglas Booth in the film Life at These Speeds.

The Carrie Diaries comes from the producers of Gossip Girl and is based on the novel of the same name by Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell. It focuses on Bradshaw coming of age in the 1980s and exploring love, sex, friendship – and Manhattan.

A pilot episode of the new show, to be written by Sex and the City scribe Amy B Harris, was commissioned by The CW last month. Gossip Girl star Blake Lively had previously been tipped to play the title role.

An older Carrie Bradshaw was played by Sarah Jessica Parker in six TV series of Sex and the City, plus two spin-off movies.
