Waterloo Road is being tipped to win most popular drama for a second year running at tonight's National Television Awards, which are voted for by viewers.
The BBC1 series, following the lives of staff and pupils at the eponymous school, gets the nod from bookies Ladbrokes just ahead of ITV1’s period drama Downton Abbey, and BBC1 shows Doctor Who and Merlin.
Meanwhile, the stars of Doctor Who and its spin-off series Torchwood go head to head in the acting categories. Matt Smith, who plays the Time Lord, and John Barrowman, aka Captain Jack Harkness, are both nominated in the most popular male drama performance category, while Karen Gillan, the Doctor’s companion Amy Pond, and Eve Myles, Torchwood’s Gwen Cooper, are among the nominees for best female drama performance.
EastEnders is set to make it two years in a row as the most popular serial drama if the bookies are to be trusted, but recently departed Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly is hot favourite to walk away with the serial drama performance gong.
In the talent show stakes, The X Factor is a nose ahead of Strictly Come Dancing and Britain’s Got Talent, with Dancing on Ice trailing behind.
BBC2’s Mock the Week is strongly tipped to win in the comedy panel show category, up against QI, Have I Got News for You and Celebrity Juice, while ITV1’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! is ahead of The Only Way Is Essex, The Apprentice and Come Dine With Me in the race for best reality programme.
