RadioTimes.com can exclusively reveal that we’re not going to reveal what was revealed by ITV in a press release yesterday and has subsequently been revealed by various media outlets in the last 24 hours as they attempt to talk about the revelation without revealing who dies at the end of Downton Abbey series two…

So what on earth is going on?

Well, if you’re a Downton fan, you’ll know that the series two finale is on this Sunday – and you’ll also know that at the end of the last episode there was – as usual – a “next time” section, which on this occasion showed a number of the cast falling ill with the deadly Spanish flu.

It has already been widely reported that there will be a funeral at the end of this series.

Yesterday, ITV sent out a press release announcing Downton Abbey had been recommissioned for a third series.  What’s wrong with that, I hear you ask?

Well, the problem is, the release contained an exhaustive cast list for the 2012 run (which of course most lazy journalists published verbatim) – however, there was one name missing… and, yep, you guessed it, it was one of the actors who plays a character who’d been seen ailing in the “next time” trailer. The other potential victims were on the list.

Now, it’s unclear whether anyone would have even noticed this had the Telegraph not put the story on the front page of the paper this morning, explaining that the mistake had been made, telling people that they would not reveal who died – but also narrowing the choices down to a number of named characters.  Subsequently other media outlets, including Sky News, have repeated the “blunder” story – and in Sky’s case have listed a large number of actors whose characters will appear in series three, including two of those seen ill in bed.

Of course, we here at RadioTimes.com are not in the business of spoiling your fun.  On realising the mistake had been made by ITV we redacted the full cast list from our news story, so there are no clues as to who will perish this Sunday on our site, even if you can remember who was in the “next time” trailer.
