Famous for: Actress / Singer

Bio: Best known for playing alcoholic landlady Angie Watts in EastEnders, Dobson turned her back on Walford in 1988 and, despite numerous offers to return to the BBC1 soap, never went back. The Christmas 1986 episode in which Dirty Den (Leslie Grantham) served her with divorce papers counts among the most memorable soap scenes ever.

Dobson has popped up in numerous TV dramas over the years, including The Bill, Holby City and Casualty. She got zapped on sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf – a fate shared by her ITV sitcom, Split Ends, which was canned after one series.

Dobson has also worked widely on the stage, looking “behind you!” in panto, looking ravishing in Calendar Girls, and looking who knows where in The Vagina Monologues. In 2003 she was nominated for an Olivier Award for best actress in Bryony Lavery’s play, Frozen, at the National Theatre.

Married to Queen guitarist Brian May, Dobson has also been known to sing a bit. She had a hit in 1986 with Anyone Can Fall in Love – a song set to the EastEnders theme tune – which reached number four in the UK singles chart.

Interestingly, when asked for her opinion on Strictly Come Dancing last year, Dobson told the Sunday Mail: “I don’t watch much TV but I hate the whole reality TV thing. I’ve been asked to do Strictly a couple of times. I was on the cusp – and it’s the only one I would be tempted by. At least you learn to dance and there’s those beautiful dresses but I can’t stand all that judgement stuff. I’d rather just learn to dance somewhere and not have to deal with the panel, they can be quite cruel.” We shall see…
