Coronation Street will return to Wednesday nights at 7:30pm in order to accommodate football schedules and free up pre-watershed slots for new programming on ITV1.
The soap opera, which has broadcast on Monday, Thursday and Friday evenings since 2009, will move from 8:30pm on Thursday to its more familiar 7:30pm Wednesday spot from autumn 2012, when ITV’s current contract with the Uefa Champions League comes to an end.
It is understood ITV will concentrate on live football on Tuesday evenings, and use Corrie on Wednesday as a “gateway” to promote a raft of new and existing entertainment, drama and factual formats.
Emmerdale will remain at 8pm on Thursdays, with the broadcaster using the vacant 8:30pm time slot to air new situation comedy.
An ITV spokesman said: “Reflecting the move of ITV1’s live football matches from Wednesday to Tuesday nights next year, Coronation Street will move from Thursday at 8:30pm to Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm from autumn 2012.”
