Susan Boyle’s life story is to be turned into a musical stage show charting her “meteoric rise from obscurity to international stardom”.
I Dreamed a Dream, named after the song that first brought SuBo to the attention of the world, will tour internationally, with actress Elaine C Smith – best known as the wife of alcoholic layabout Rab C Nesbitt in the eponymous Scottish sitcom – playing the lead role.
The 50-year-old singer from West Lothian in Scotland became an overnight star after a breathtaking performance in the auditions round of Britain’s Got Talent in 2009. And although she eventually came second in the competition she went on to sell 14 million albums worldwide.
The show’s producer, Michael Harrison, said of Boyle: “She is an inspiring woman and her story is an excellent one to tell – someone with a raw talent who surprises the world and overturns all the odds to make a new life for herself. It’s got all the qualities of a fairy tale, but with the added bonus of being absolutely true.”
Boyle herself said: “I am happy that the musical is being produced. I never thought my life story would end up on the stage but a lot has happened in two years and it is a very exciting prospect. I hope everyone enjoys the show and I promise there will be a few surprises along the way.”
I Dreamed a Dream will open at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal on Friday 23 March 2012, before going on tour.
