Complex, involved and in Danish with subtitles, The Killing was an unexpected hit for BBC4. But now the channel is hoping to repeat the success with Borgen (“Government”), a new drama from the same stable.
“BBC4 always buys with an eye to excellence,” claimed controller Richard Klein. “Government is dramatic and entertaining, very much in the mould of The Killing, and fits BBC4’s brief to bring the best international television to the audience.”
The ten-part drama stars Sidse Babett Knudsen as a politician who rises to power and has her beliefs and abilities challenged.
Borgen’s original producer Camilla Hammerich of DR, the production arm of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, says: “I am proud that a series about politics can travel this far and hopefully reach a large audience outside Denmark. I think it is fantastic that the series will be shown on the BBC.”
