The official trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes has been released, promising a serious remodelling of the popular sci-fi franchise.
The film, to be released 12 August 2011 in the UK, acts as a prequel to Tim Burton’s 2001 Planet of the Apes and is directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist).
It sees James Franco star as scientist Will Rodman, who begins testing a potential cure for Alzheimer’s on a group of apes.
Andy Serkis takes on the role of Ceasar, an ape that begins to mutate as a result of the research and leads a revolt against the scientists.
Frieda Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox and Tom Felton also star.
While Tim Burton’s version was a global financial success, it received mixed critical acclaim. The prequel makes use of new CGI technology to create a more realistic impression of the apes.
The re-working also draws on elements from the original Planet of the Apes films released in the 1960’s and 70’s, to create a brand new story and potential for future sequels.
