Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan is to star as supermodel Jean Shrimpton in We’ll Take Manhattan, a new BBC4 drama about the 1960s fashion icon and her “explosive love affair” with photographer David Bailey in New York.
It’s a one-off tale centred on a week-long photoshoot Bailey did with Shrimpton in 1962 for Vogue magazine. Richard Klein, controller BBC4, says that week was “a moment in time, a fusion of talents that had a huge impact on cultural life”.
Gillan said of the role: “I am so excited to be playing somebody who had such a lasting impact on the fashion world. I can’t wait to take on the challenge of bringing Jean and Bailey’s fascinating love story to life. 60s here I come!”
Filming of We’ll Take Manhattan starts in May. Karen Gillan will also be heading for the US and the 1960s as Amy Pond when Doctor Who returns to BBC1 this Easter with The Impossible Astronaut, set in 1969 Utah.
