Matt Baker has been confirmed as the new co-host of The One Show, BBC1’s weeknightly magazine programme.
The Countryfile presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star landed the job ahead of a long list of prospective candidates including Matt Alwright, John Barrowman, Richard Bacon and the show’s Friday-night host Chris Evans.
Baker will replace stand-up comedian Jason Manford, who quit the series in November after admitting to exchanging sexual messages with female fans via text and Twitter.
A Bafta-winning former Blue Peter presenter, Baker already has experience of the One Show sofa, having sat in as guest host alongside Alex Jones several times during and after Manford’s departure.
Something of a TV heart-throb, Baker starts his new job on Valentine’s Day and said he was “over the moon” at the appointment.
“The BBC has made everything possible for me so I can also continue presenting Countryfile,” he said. “It’s the ideal combination for me and I can’t wait to get started.”
His co-presenter Alex Jones said Baker was “fantastic to work with and the perfect choice”.
