Following Meryl Streep's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in 2011 movie The Iron Lady, Naomi Watts is the latest Hollywood actress to take on the role of a British public figure as she plays the People's Princess in new biopic Diana, formerly known as Caught in Flight.
Streep bagged an Oscar for her performance, possibly in part due to her uncanny resemblance to Thatcher, and if Watts's hopes of following in her footsteps are based on how convincing a Diana she makes, then the first official photo (above) suggests she could be in with a chance.
Speaking from the set of the movie, Watts said: "I'm excited and honoured to be playing the role of a truly remarkable woman, who had such a positive and profound impact in so many ways."
Filming on Diana began this week and will take in a number of countries across Europe and Africa as well as various locations around London and the south of England.
The film charts the final two years of Princess Diana's life, during which time she cemented her reputation as a humanitarian campaigner and began her relationship with Dodi Fayed, who died in the same car crash that killed Diana on 31 August 1997.
Diana is due for release next year.
