Aim for 10,000 steps a day!

Regular exercise is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy, both physically and mentally. One of the problems many of us face, however, is simply finding the time to exercise when we already have such busy daily routines.

A good starting point is to try and make 10,000 steps a day. You don’t need any special equipment or sports gear, just a pair of comfortable walking shoes.

You will need to make a conscious effort to walk more, but you can do this by making a few simple changes, such as parking the car that bit further away from the shops when you go out, or avoiding getting behind the wheel altogether when you can walk instead.

If you have a dog you already walk once a day, try extending your walk, or do two or three walks if you have time.

Why walking is one of the best forms of exercise

Walking has lots of important health benefits. If you are able to walk 10,000 steps five or more days of the week, then this will provide you with more than the recommended amount of physical activity we should all be doing. It is equivalent to around five miles which might sound a vast amount, but given that we usually walk at a speed of between 2.5 and 3 miles an hour, it takes less than two hours in total.

Remember that exercising releases endorphins, making you feel happier. Research has found that moderate physical activity can lower the risk of depression by 30%. Walking can also help reduce the risk of early death, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke by 30%, 50% and 35% respectively.

Walking also involves being outside, where during the summer months you will have greater exposure to the sunshine, boosting your vitamin D levels.

You’ll get fitter and thinner, as walking burns off calories and energy, so you should also sleep better at night too.
