This real-time sequel begins the moment its predecessor ends, as a four-man Spanish SWAT team escorts a doctor into the quarantined Barcelona apartment block to procure a sample of the deadly virus that's turning everyone into rabid zombies. A shoulder-cam provides shaky subjective visuals as co-writer/directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza shift the documentary-like scenario into weirder territory for variations on omnipresent dread that are spring-loaded with sudden jolts. While it's more of the same to some degree, it can't be classed a lazy sequel owing to the directors' firm grasp of their material and some major surprises that lurk in the final act. Failure to connect with new characters, including another late-arriving group, limits the effectiveness of the film, yet the structural ingenuity and supernatural links save the day.
