Five years after Mulholland Drive, indie icon David Lynch returns to the big screen with his most purposely inscrutable project yet. A surreal, three-hour drama shot on digital video, it's an atmospheric enigma that's more art than entertainment. Laura Dern is astonishing as Hollywood actress Nikki Grace, who faces an escalating nightmare after winning a coveted role in a cursed studio production. Becoming increasingly consumed by her character, Susan, she finds screen life and real life merging, until neither she - nor we - are certain who she really is, or whether the disturbing events that unfold are depicting Nikki or Susan's experiences. Fans of the writer/director's early work, such as Eraserhead, will be delighted to see him revisit his experimental roots, delivering a free-flowing tale that is visually bewitching, darkly comic and frequently terrifying. Anybody else is likely to be bored and baffled, lost like Nikki herself among the melding realities, talking rabbits and other dreamlike quirks.
