Originally not intended to be a Carry On, this turned out to be one of the jewels of the series. It hilariously spoofs The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Talbot Rothwell's script is stuffed with comic incidents and names ranging from Sir Rodney Ffing to the Duc de Pommfrit. Sid James is superb, whether camping it up as a society fop or cutting a dash as the Black Fingernail, while Kenneth Williams's Camembert - the "big cheese" of the French Revolution - is as ripe as can be. Joan Sims also excels as Desirée Dubarry, who poses as the Duchess de la Plume de ma Tante to lure Sid to Paris.
Plot Summary
Comedy starring Sidney James as Sir Rodney Ffing, alias the Black Fingernail, the architect of a number of spectacular rescues of aristocrats during the French Revolution. But the malevolent Citizen Camembert (Kenneth Williams) is soon on his trail.
