Sherlock Holmes and the Spider Woman

Sherlock Holmes and the Spider Woman

Roy William Neill (1944)

U Certificate

Our Score
Dr Watson shooting at Sherlock Holmes? The mind boggles. Have no fear - it's not deliberate, though it could be lethal. Here, in one of the best entries in the series, the serene elegance of Basil Rathbone as Holmes is just a tad ruffled when he's set up in a shooting gallery by the great Gale Sondergaard - as vicious a foe as Holmes has faced in a film. The only fly, or flaw, in the web is that Nigel Bruce's Dr Watson is at his most boringly bumbling.

Sherlock Holmes and his reliable sidekick Dr Watson try to solve a series of strange suicides. The victims, all prominent businessmen, seem to have been driven to take their own lives by someone else - but the case leaves the daredevil detective in mortal danger. Mystery, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, with Gale Sondergaard, Dennis Hoey and Mary Gordon.
