The final film based on Stieg Larsson's bestselling thriller trilogy opens with a whimper but ends with a bang. Critically injured after the violent conclusion to The Girl Who Played with Fire, goth computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) is hospitalised and awaiting a psychiatric review. Tension builds as we wonder whether the girl with the dragon tattoo will ever be strong enough to testify against the state-sponsored sex traffickers and child pornographers she has exposed. Flitting between Lisbeth's woes and the investigation to clear her name led by crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), this overlong closing chapter gets bogged down with much tying of loose ends. Rapace has little to do except smoulder beneath layers of black eyeliner and silver piercings during the courtroom showdown, but it's sufficient. The first two films set up her grievances against what Larsson called "Men Who Hate Women"; the concluding instalment allows her fearsome antiheroine to take a sweet revenge.
Plot Summary
