A seemingly utopian society hides sinister secrets in this slick, futuristic action adventure from Girlfight director Karyn Kusama. Based on the MTV animated series, it's set in the year 2415, when the human survivors of a killer virus inhabit a hi-tech walled city. Here, acrobatic rebel agent Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) seeks vengeance for her sister's political murder, finally getting the opportunity when she's ordered to assassinate dictator Trevor Goodchild (Marton Csokas). After the emotional intensity of Monster, Oscar winner Theron obviously relishes her chance to have fun and she kicks butt with aplomb. But although her dominatrix-type costumes and physical agility are visually arresting, she's hampered by an underdeveloped storyline and weak dialogue. While the original cartoon was tongue in cheek, Kusama's version takes itself too seriously and is ultimately the embodiment of style over substance - handsome yet disappointingly lifeless.
