Universal Soldier

Universal Soldier

Roland Emmerich (1992)

18 Certificate

Our Score
This sci-fi potboiler from director Roland Emmerich is a by-the-numbers affair, with dialogue you'd swear appears in comic balloons. But as no one takes the ultimate warrior premise seriously, either behind or in front of the camera, the unpretentious pandering to the action-plus brigade is a likeable strength, not a jarring weakness. The Muscles from Brussels (Jean-Claude Van Damme) has the edge over the Swedish Meatball (Dolph Lundgren) in every respect, from his showcase kick boxing to his send-up nude scene, in an OTT jeopardy jackpot where what you see is exactly what you get.

A government project succeeds in reanimating dead soldiers to form an expendable combat unit for dangerous missions. However, when two of the resurrected squad members experience flashbacks of their previous lives, they remember they had killed each other and continue the conflict where they left off. Sci-fi thriller, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and Ally Walker.
