Ray Winstone reteams with the writers of Sexy Beast here to play another gangster whose tough shell hides a soft centre. Colin Diamond (Winstone) is a broken man following the admission by his wife (Joanne Whalley) that she is leaving him for a young waiter. So much moping prompts his criminal pals (including John Hurt, Ian McShane and Tom Wilkinson) to kidnap "Loverboy" (Melvil Poupaud) for bloody revenge. Debuting director Malcolm Venville is careful not to overdo the gore, but there's enough foul language and vile behaviour to guarantee a wince per minute. That said, the dialogue has a great, lyrical flow, especially when delivered by Hurt. The way the characters grate on each other is also fun to watch and, with most of the action taking place in one room, the tension is heightened. The plot does feel sketchy and drawn-out at times, but overall, this film packs a punch.
