Review

It’s 1915, and the ageing painter Pierre Auguste Renoir (Michel Bouquet) is ensconced in his country home in the south of France, seeking inspiration. Along comes the fierily red-headed Andrée Heuschling (Christa Théret), who models for the artist and becomes the inspiration, too, for his son Jean (Vincent Rottiers), newly back – and injured – from the war.

Giles Bourdos’s lavish film, awash with golden light, reveals the troubled relationship between the artist and his son, who went on to become a celebrated film-maker. And Andrée? Reader, she married Jean, and went on to star in some of his earliest movies.
