Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This deftly plotted morality thriller was a hit in Sweden in 2010, spawning two sequels and catapulting its lean, strong-jawed star Joel Kinnaman in the direction of Hollywood via the US remake of TV series The Killing. Here, he plays a slick - and slicked-back - Stockholm economics student who, Gatsby-style, affects the persona of a high-flying jet-setter while living in digs and driving an unlicensed cab. The bungled pick-up of an escaped Chilean drug dealer (Matias Padin Varela) opens Kinnaman's eyes to the possibilities of organised crime and he is soon fronting a plot to launder money through a failing bank, as Serbian hitman Dragomir Mrsic closes in. As coolly atmospheric as the best in Scandi-drama, Easy Money matches every thrilling gunfight and tense drug deal with an insight into the humanity of its protagonists, while the moving relationship between Mrsic and his eight-year-old daughter (Lea Stojanov) recalls the dynamic of French thriller Leon.
