This assured slice-of-life drama from Brazil sees a private security firm arrive in a well-heeled suburb, but their avowed intention to protect the residents' property may hide a darker motive. Very much an ensemble piece, the film follows various storylines, a little like a TV soap opera, flitting between a disgruntled wife, an uneasy love affair and the secret machinations of the local landowner. In doing so, confident first-time writer/director Kleber Mendonça Filho delivers a portrait of the national psyche, whose lingering class and ethnic divisions still underpin everyday affairs. What's so fascinating, though, is that we're allowed to read the signs for ourselves, rather than having everything earnestly spelt out, which draws us into the story's consistently surprising weave of wry comedy and underlying tension. Blending the social commentary of Michael Haneke with sly Jacques Tati-style wit, this is a disarming and utterly delightful original that will reward the adventurous and perceptive viewer.
