Getaway

Like Blackpool through a stick of rock, this action thriller for undiscerning petrolheads has "small-screen viewing" written right through it. It's watchable enough, but you wouldn't want to pay cinema prices for the pleasure. Ethan Hawke plays a former racing driver whose wife is kidnapped by crooks. For reasons too complicated to go into here, they force him to steal a specially armoured sports car, and to scoot round the city causing complete and utter mayhem. Mouthy rich girl Selena Gomez finds herself taken along for the ride. There is a plot of sorts. But essentially the film solely exists to see how many pursuing Bulgarian police cars it can trash. That's right. Bulgarian. For Getaway is set and shot in Sofia, the country's capital. But so generically is the city shot that there's not even a valid "touristy" reason for giving it more than a passing glance.
