Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This remarkable documentary from Michael Grigsby revisits the lives of three US veterans of the Vietnam War over 40 years after the British director had first captured their testimony in his 1970 television film I Was a Soldier. Black-and-white footage of the men taken just after their return home to Texas weaves in and out of newly shot interviews, where they explain how the outrage and abandonment they felt at being left alone to deal with the horrific memories of combat has only intensified with time. As they reflect on personal lives virtually destroyed by the war's grim psychological legacy, the film not only offers a record of what they've been through but also serves to highlight the long-term effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. And with its unadorned approach and slow-building intensity, it makes for a fitting tribute to Grigsby himself, who died shortly after the film's completion.
