Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The enduring appeal of Jane Austen's England is explored in this uneven but often hilarious romp - a comedy, for once, aimed squarely at a female audience. Keri Russell stars as Jane Hayes, a single American woman in her 30s who is obsessed with Austen, especially the BBC's adaptation of Pride and Prejudice featuring Colin Firth's portrayal of romantic hero Mr Darcy. To live out her fantasies, Jane spends her savings on a trip to the UK, to take a holiday in "Austenland", where a cast of costumed actors will re-create the Regency period. Once there, though, Jane - who has booked the economy package - soon realises that all her anxieties remain with her: a single woman is a single woman in any era. Though it often blunders into farce, Austenland is nevertheless a warm-hearted and deceptively smart comedy of modern manners, with scene-stealing turns by Jane Seymour as the theme park's mean-spirited proprietor and Jennifer Coolidge as Jane's cheerfully vulgar fellow traveller.
