Mixing elements of frisky French farce with middle-class American comedy, It's Complicated is a daffy and delectable spree from Nancy Meyers (Something's Gotta Give). Meryl Streep plays Jane, a divorced mum of three who runs a bakery and lives in up-market southern California splendour, having split from her husband Jake (Alec Baldwin) a decade before. Meeting at their son's graduation, Jane and Jake end up in bed together, igniting the thought that their ten years apart might have prepared them to reunite, despite Jake's current marriage to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell). Adding a wrinkle to proceedings is Adam (Steve Martin), a divorced architect who woos Jane with cautious optimism. Although seemingly stuck in Mamma Mia! mode, Streep's polite resistance is the perfect foil for Baldwin's earnest portrayal of a horny old dog. It's a thoughtful, daring and fun film, in which Meyers, once again, has put some glamour into the sex lives of the 50-somethings.
