The Bling Ring

Based on a Vanity Fair article called The Suspects Wore Louboutins, the fifth film by Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola is a dryly funny but really rather perceptive take on a very modern kind of crime. Set in the late noughties, it concerns a group of high-school kids (among them former Hermione Granger, Emma Watson), led by the manipulative Rebecca (Katie Chang), who become so obsessed with tabloid stars' private lives that they decide to burgle their houses. Though nominally not a comedy, there are plenty of laughs to be had, mostly from the outlaw band's incursions into the gaudy real-life home of Paris Hilton, which they steal from and hang out in - multiple times - without the heiress ever noticing. More seriously, The Bling Ring addresses head-on our culture's obsession with celebrity, investigating a post-reality-TV world where everybody and anybody can be not just famous for 15 minutes, but rich, too.
