Our Score
Craig Brewer's urban drama features a star-making turn by Terrence Howard as DJay, a small-time pimp who lives with three of his women in a broken-down house in Memphis. However, DJay dreams of trading in the life of hustling for one showing off his skills at "flow", the essence of smooth rap. In a makeshift home studio, aided and abetted by local friends (including Barbershop's Anthony Anderson), DJay lays down some music and plans to hustle a visiting rap star (played by Ludacris) into giving him a hand up. Alternately unblinkingly truthful about the pimp code of conduct and as corny as cheese puffs, Hustle & Flow works its charm by subtle degrees. But this is Howard's show. With his jheri-curled hair and cunning green-eyed glare, he gives an outstanding performance that betters even his impressive work in Crash, where his striving yuppie couldn't have been more different from lowlife DJay.
