Stranger on Horseback

Stranger on Horseback

Jacques Tourneur (1955)

PG Certificate

Our Score
Joel McCrea brings his calm authority to this strong but unusually brief western, playing the circuit judge who dares to arrest Kevin McCarthy, the spoiled killer son of the local land baron (John McIntire) and then has to coax witnesses to testify. The film was shot on location in Sedona, Arizona (not in Mexico, as is sometimes claimed), using an unsatisfactory colour process. However, highly capable director Jacques Tourneur draws effective performances from the cast, which also includes Emile Meyer as the intimidated local sheriff, John Carradine as a corrupt attorney, and the young Czech-born Miroslava, a star of Mexican cinema who killed herself just as this film was released.

The son of a powerful cattle baron gets away with murder, but a judge is determined to make him stand trial - despite fierce opposition from the killer's father. Western, starring Joel McCrea and Kevin McCarthy.
