In this combination of road movie and odd-couple comedy, uptight architect Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr) is desperate to get back to LA for the birth of his first child. An encounter with screwy would-be thespian Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis) at the airport leads to Peter being put on the no-fly list and, as a last resort, he has to drive across America with Ethan. Following a template already established by John Hughes's much-loved 1987 film
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
, the film's humour comes from scornful fusspot Downey Jr's growing aggravation at his unpredictably imbecilic travelling companion and the sundry slapstick scrapes they get into en route. The trouble is, director Todd Phillips's follow-up to the hugely popular
clings a bit too obviously to Hughes's proven comedy formula, so the free-wheeling fun never feels quite as fresh or believable as it should. Although Galifianakis is essentially reprising his
role as the loose-cannon man-child in a burly beardy bloke's body, Downey Jr simmers effectively and there are some surprisingly poignant moments amid the high jinks.
