Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The family that dines together dies together in this ferociously entertaining home-invasion horror from director Adam Wingard, a contributor to compendium horrors V/H/S and The ABCs of Death. Following a suitably unnerving set-up, the story moves on to the main event, which sees members of the Davison family and their wives and girlfriends fetching up at mum and dad's rural pile for an anniversary dinner. Hostilities have barely surfaced between the siblings - with Joe Swanberg brilliantly supercilious as older brother Drake - before masked maniacs lay siege to the mansion. So far, so bad. But little do the tooled-up attackers know that one of their prospective victims is a dab hand at do-it-yourself defence. This adds an innovative and unexpected frisson to a terrific film that's suspenseful, gory and very droll, and announces Wingard as a talent to watch.
