Bronco Billy

Bronco Billy

Clint Eastwood (1980)

PG Certificate

Our Score
Director Clint Eastwood also takes the starring role in this small-scale charmer about a shoe sales clerk who dreams of becoming a cowboy. Eastwood assembles a bunch of other no-hopers and oddballs, among them Sondra Locke, who launch a Wild West show with a singular brand of all-American optimism. It's The Outlaw Josey Wales without the spitting, shooting and killing, as Eastwood deftly plays with his image as a solitary man of action, the loner who resents company but gets it all the same. The director is a sure judge of tone, and there's sufficient edge and wit to keep bathos at bay in what is at times a rather sentimental yarn. And, thankfully, there isn't an orangutan in sight.

A modern-day cowboy travels across America with a Wild West show, but has trouble attracting an audience. Adding to his woes, he is joined by a spoiled heiress, who comes to like life on the road but also seems to attract bad luck. Comedy Western, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. With Sondra Locke, Scatman Crothers, Sam Bottoms and Geoffrey Lewis.
