This densely plotted thriller stars James McAvoy as a fine-art auctioneer involved in an audacious plan to steal a Goya painting worth millions of pounds. After suffering a blow to the head during the robbery he forgets where he's hidden the canvas, so heist mastermind Vincent Cassel enlists hypnotherapist Rosario Dawson to help unlock his memory - but further obstacles and mysteries emerge as she delves into his subconscious. Director Danny Boyle embraces the archetypes, deception and duplicity of vintage film noir, albeit with a hi-tech edge, but the often confusing layers of plot twists leave the complex story on the verge of collapsing in on itself. McAvoy plays the inside man out of his depth with a neat blend of mischief and wide-eyed innocence, although it's Cassel's ruthless kingpin who makes the strongest impression.
An art dealer becomes involved in a plot to steal a valuable painting from his own auction house, but a blow to the head causes him to develop amnesia. Unable to remember the stolen item's whereabouts, he starts seeing a hypnotist to recall where he left it, but as she searches the depths of his mind, the barriers between fiction and reality begin to blur. Danny Boyle's non-linear crime thriller, starring James McAvoy and Rosario Dawson.
