Our Score
Don't let the classy cast (Jessica Lange, Gwyneth Paltrow) fool you: this is a truly awful film. Paltrow plays the young woman who marries mummy's boy Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!), only to discover when they visit the family home that his mother (Lange) will do just about anything to keep her boy close at hand. This should have been played more for laughs or scares; instead, it's just done ludicrously seriously, with Paltrow and Lange desperately trying to inject a bit of class, while Schaech gives a good imitation of a wooden plank. (Interesting behind the scenes note: in an interview, Schaech was quoted as having said he would have rather kissed Lange than, in his opinion, the less sexy Paltrow. Perhaps not the best career move.)

A domineering mother goes to extreme lengths to lure her son away from his New York career to take over the running of the family country estate in Kentucky - and ensure his girlfriend falls pregnant and produces his heir. Thriller, starring Jessica Lange, Gwyneth Paltrow, Johnathon Schaech, Nina Foch and Debi Mazar.
