Our Score
This American remake of the 2003 Korean hit A Tale of Two Sisters loses the psychological complexities and subtle art house stylings of the original to become a straightforward thriller mystery. Grief-stricken over her mother's tragic death, teenager Anna (Emily Browning) returns home after months of therapy to be haunted by ghosts that reveal dark secrets about stepmother-to-be Rachel (Elizabeth Banks). The debut film of the Guard brothers (Thomas and Charles) is more heightened-reality family drama than flat-out horror, and the insipid shocks mainly revolve around burnt or misshapen spectres. Browning and Banks make valiant attempts at disguising the true nature of their roles, yet despite polished production values, once again the refined dread of a popular Asian legend gets lost in blandly recycled translation.

Summary

A teenager is left traumatised by her mother's death in a fire, and is committed to a mental institution after trying to kill herself. A year later, she is released and reunited with her sister, but they both begin to suspect their new stepmother may have been responsible for the fire. Thriller, starring Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, David Strathairn and Elizabeth Banks.
