The second instalment of the two-part Mesrine chronicle finds Vincent Cassel's armed robber back in French custody (not for long, of course) where he realises his criminal exploits have made him a legend - a legend he feels he has to live up to. So, we're set for another series of escapes, heists, and flagrant grandstanding from a man whose pretence that he was rebelling against capitalism and state authority comes to sound increasingly like the delusions of a trigger-happy narcissist. The tone is darker than the previous film (which you probably will need to see to really appreciate this one), not least because we already know the violent fate awaiting Mesrine, whose increasing use of trickery and disguise allows leading man Cassel to deliver a central performance in the De Niro class. By contrast, Mathieu Amalric's wily career crook and gamine moll Ludivine Sagnier do well to get a look-in, and the pacey, appropriately 1970s-influenced visuals provide a hip backdrop to Cassel's explosive combination of brutality and charisma.
