Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Director Robert Redford's political thriller shows us that for some ageing radicals, the fire still burns within, even if there's snow on the roof. He casts himself as a former activist who goes on the run after his cover is blown and recruits support from a baker's dozen of stars, namely Shia LaBeouf, Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Terrence Howard, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Elliott and the ever-mysterious Brit Marling. It's an interesting if earnest take on the discrepancies between activism and civic duty, although a stodgy screenplay, based on Neil Gordon's novel, hamstrings the drama. Even so, big thrills are to be had seeing rightfully famous - and still remarkable - performers from the 1960s strutting their stuff alongside a new generation of actors. You'll get a chill up your spine.
